Martial dances through the Burnley defence, who are left looking a bit leaden footed. He gets a shot away and hits the target. No power behind it though.9:49pm

United have no threat out wide, just trying to lump and bump their way through the Burnley centre. Burnley, of course, have plenty of lumps and bumps in the centre themselves. They stand firm, more than firm here.9:45pm

Greenwood receives the ball and flicks it over the head of Taylor! Droooool. Charlie Taylor rugby tackles him. Hmm. Well, I guess he didn’t have much choice. It’s at least a yellow and a foul on the edge of the box, VAR is having a look but there were sufficient other men back that I think a yellow will suffice.9:38pm

63 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 2

Westwood is fouled, and is hurt. Burnley run the clock a bit, and then have  chance to deliver a freekick in. MUFC deal with that one.9:36pm

60 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 2

Whenever I blog United I always seem to end up typing “James a rare bright spot”

And thus tonight, as the talented young Welshman dances, opens up his body and shapes a shot that Pope gathers a touch theatrically. 9:32pm

The camera naturally finds Solskjaer, who looks deflated, resigned, and wretched.9:29pm

GOOOOOOAL! Manchester United 0 Burnley 2 (Rodriguez 56)

Rodriguez with a one two with Wood and lets her rip from the side edge of the box, left hand side. Ball sits up nice. He’s beaten De Gea at the near post! It’s an absolute thunderbison of a hit, De Gea beaten for sheer pace I think. Should a top, top, top goalie be beaten at the near post thus?

This is absolute muck from United, playing it around at the back and just looking like a bunch of clueless cowardy custards. Like any right-thinking football supporter I am thoroughly enjoying MUFC being hopeless, but there is a limit, and that limit is when you have to actually sit through it. I can only imagine that their fans, from Basingstoke to Bangalore, must be livid.9:21pm

47 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 1

Fred slips over in the box, falling on the ball, not his fault and no penalty. Mee slides in and clatters De Gea. Fair and square.9:18pm

Hard to disagree with this

Miguel Delaney@MiguelDelaney

The blunt reality is that if Solskjaer had no prior association with the club, a manager who had got relegated with Cardiff and won leagues with Molde never would have been appointed by a club like Utd.

It’s not that it’s too early to tell.
It’s that he shouldn’t be in the job.5,18220:47 – 19 Jan 2020Twitter Ads information and privacy1,591 people are talking about this9:04pm

Half time: Man United 0 Burnley 1

Burnley not the most sophisticated side the league has seen, but they are defending stoutly – made easier by the fact that nobody is really getting in the box for MUFC. And they have an attacking method: dead ball, big lads, win second ball, bundle it home. It worked like a treat.

OGS really is hopelessly out of his depth in my view, but even so, surely this shouldn’t be the most difficult tactical puzzler to solve.9:02pm

45+ mins: Man United 0 Burnley 1

More worries for United as the half comes to an end, Ashley Westwood with a good corner. Kept out by hook or by crook and that is the half.9:01pm

45 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 1

Williams shoves Rodriguez. Another chance for Burnley to load up the trebuchet. Matic wins this ball.9:00pm

43 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 1

United coming back with energy if not much nous. Pereira prominent, coming forward. But where’s Martial – behind him! United don’t seem to have anyone who wants to get in the box. Pereira ends up having an optimistic, futile shot.8:54pm

GOAL! Manchester United 0 Burnley 1 (Wood 39)

Burnley have another freekick… Westwood delivers. Ben Mee flicks it on… and Chris Wood has mullered it home! Wood got in front of Maguire all too easily, he’s really had it away there, and the big striker has smashed it into the back of the net.

Ten for the season for Chris.8:53pm

I’d pass a law against games kicking off later than 7.45pm. Chelsea-Arsenal, Man U-Burnley – 8.15pm. Zero consideration for tens of thousands of people trying to get home afterwards.47621:40 – 22 Jan 2020Twitter Ads information and privacy100 people are talking about this8:49pm

Matic plays it low and diagonal. Mata dummies! Martial gathers it, takes a touch, takes another… and Charlie Taylor produces a superlative saving tackle. Martial needed to go “one touch – BANG” there, he wanted too long.8:47pm

31 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 0

Wan-Bissaka gets down the right again, McNeil ought to have been shrewd and shown him onto the other foot because AWB has got one foot, and here he is with that right boot, crossing for James. James does well to get there but heads over.8:46pm

30 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 0

United have looked a bit more sophisticated but to be honest there has not been a huge amount of kwalidee from either side.8:45pm

29 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 0

McNeil stands over another freekick, this one much more central and definitely one to have a crack from. The former Man Utd kid runs up…. and blooters it into the stands. Shame.8:40pm

25 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 0

Great chance! Best of the game. Burnley have a freekick, they get the nod on. Chris Wood manoeuvres (ie shoves) Harry Maguire out of the way and really should have scored from close range. I think there was maybe an offside or two to go along with the push though so it might not have stood.8:38pm

22 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 0

Mata tries his luck, it rebounds off a Burnley defender, and here’s that man Fred again. He hits the target, but the Pontiff has seen that one all the way and flops down on it with plenty to spare.8:36pm

19 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 0

Taylor bringing some great energy at left back as he carries the ball out of defence, but the long ball is lacking in sophistication and United are soon coming back at the visitors.8:34pm

Matic… Mata…

Burnley opened up like a tin o beans here!

Out to Wan-B on the flank, he’s making hay with those overlaps, and he crosses again low. JUST bundled away in time.8:28pm

11 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 0

Excellent move from United with Mata prompting, Martial coming into it. Back to the classy distributor Pereira, who sees Wan-Bissaka out on the right wing. Wanners-Bissakers crosses, Pereira has continued the run, but is just crowded out.8:24pm

Martial is down in the centre circle. Nervous times for Ole. Martial gingerly gets back up.8:20pm

4 mins: Man United 0 Burnley 0

Lowton is in the side, Burnley’s sole change, he replaced Bardsley, the former United player. Lowton takes a throw in down the right. The Clarets are enjoying both territory and possession right now.8:17pm

MUFC on the front foot early on, the aforementioned Fred has a crack, but well wide.8:16pm

Burnley travel to Old Trafford

For the curious kick-off time of 2015 this Wednesday evening. We will have the Manchester United team news and the Burnley team news ahead of this Premier League fixture around an hour before kick off. In the meantime, let’s have some build-up to this fixture, which sees 14th-placed Burnley make the short trip through Lancashire to Manchester, where the hosts sit in fifth place.

Man United have nine points from their last five, Burnley have just three: the visitors had lost four in a row in the League but stopped the rot with a much-needed win at home to Leicester last Sunday. That was the same day, of  course, that Liverpool rubbed United noses deep into just how huge the gulf has become between England’s two greatest clubs. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s guys gave an okay account of themselves but it is just a different class altogether over at Anfield. Liverpool are THIRTY points ahead of Man United. 30!
